Regression: Introduction–Question 1

Imagine now that you were asked to predict how a student in another class would perform.

Grade % obtaining grade
A (90 – 100 pts) 10%
B (80 – 89 pts) 15%
C (70 – 79 pts) 50%
D (60 – 69 pts) 15%
F (0 – 59 pts) 10%

Question 1: Given no other information, what would be your best guess of the grade of any randomly selected person in the class?

Select an Answer:

A: 90 – 100 pts

Incorrect

Only 10 percent of the students in the class earned an A. If we randomly selected 1 student it is relatively unlikely that that that person earned an A.

B: 80 – 89 pts

Incorrect

Only 15 percent of the students in the class earned a B. If we randomly selected 1 student it is relatively unlikely that that that person earned a B.

C: 70 – 79 pts

Correct

The middle of the grade distribution is a C and 50% of the class received a C grade, so a grade of C is our best guess. .

D: 60 – 69 pts

Incorrect

Only 15 percent of the students in the class earned a D. If we randomly selected 1 student it is relatively unlikely that that that person earned a D.

F: <60 pts

Incorrect

Only 10 percent of the students in the class earned an F. If we randomly selected 1 student it is relatively unlikely that that that person earned an F.
